Nathan,

Thanks for your comments. I'm the technical lead for the Fluid Project. We do indeed use existing JavaScript tools, jQuery in particular. It's a fantastic tool and has saved us a lot of time and effort. We're also sharing our work back with the jQuery community by helping to make the jQuery UI widget set more accessible.

That said, our code plays nice with other toolkits. If you're using YUI or one of the other great libraries out there, you shouldn't have any trouble using them alongside Fluid components.

Fluid components are designed to fill the gaps in existing widget sets: interactions that are flexible, accessible, and carefully designed. We're not out to build yet another foundational JavaScript toolkit; we want to adapt and enhance wherever possible.

Ben,

I agree with you that there's a real opportunity to create innovative new user interfaces. Our users--teachers, students, instructional designers, and so on--should definitely be an integral part of the design process. Jutta's post touches on some of the ways we're engaging users through research, interviews, workshops, and participatory design in Fluid.

Ben, the post above *is* about innovating a better front-end. Could you explain what you mean by authentic learning pedagogy? I don't understand how applies at all the post above about better UI design.

If the UI is such a problem. Why don't we innovate and simply create a better one. Why don't we rely on the pedagogy of authentic learning and not on the IT background of the people who are building the back end. Anyway, thanks for your extensive post here.

The fluid project seems to be posting some nice controls, but I'm not sure why existing projects like YUI aren't being used. Generic GPL javascript frameworks are fantastic, and have saved me much time and effort.
